Opera Talk: Interrupted Operatic Weddings

Showcasing Operatic Weddings whose nuptial parties or moments of bliss are dramatically interrupted which make for wonderful theatrical and musical episodes! In Mozart’s Don Giovanni, the Don’s persuasive power causes Zerlina, a bride-to-be, to abandon her fiancé. In Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly wedding contracts are signed, the maritaial bliss is immediately shattered by the arrival of Lucia’s real lover and Butterfly’s reprimanding uncle. The phony wedding contract signed by Donizetti’s Don Pasquale makes for a buffo episode of high comedy. Finally, in Il Trovatore, when Manrico’s pre-wedding duet is interrupted with the news of his mother’s capture by DiLuna we get a climatic “Di quella pira” moment!
