Opera is an art form with a rich history that reaches out to us in the present world. With vivid music, characters, and acting, it engages the senses, emotions, and intellect. It tells stories of fantasy and timeless stories of life, love, tragedy and hope. Join Opera at Florham to experience the best that this powerful music has to offer.
- Joan Del Giudice, Opera at Florham President
Opera at Florham presents professional vocalists in recital, concert, and competition from opera to American Songbook - we believe Opera Is for Everyone, and offer low-cost, high-quality events to the community.
Our Musicale series is the only long running opera recital series in the state of New Jersey. Each Musicale features three accomplished vocalists from around the world. The artists perform classics and rarities of opera and American Songbook enhanced by stories, history and facts about the music.
Every year, Opera at Florham presents the International Vocal Competition, where the best young talents in opera compete for large cash prizes before a celebrated collection of jurists and a live audience. Competition winners regularly go on to achieve decorated international careers.
In 1982, Violetta DuPont co-founded Opera at Florham at Fairleigh Dickinson University as an extension of the Music Department under the guidance of its chair, Dr. Charles Del Rosso. In its initial years, Opera at Florham provided recitals on campus in the stately Mansion and two annual operas at the Dreyfuss theater. The performers were a combination of professional artists, musicians and students.
1987 marked the inaugural Violetta DuPont International Vocal Competition which continues annually.
In 1995, Opera at Florham became a separate incorporated 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization but continues to be affiliated with Fairleigh Dickinson University. Since then, Opera at Florham has provided the community with world-class, affordable performances by professionally trained operatic vocalists in a variety of settings: opera recitals (Musicales), fully staged operas with orchestra, semi-staged operas in concert, the annual Vocal Competition, and outreach and education programs.
Opera at Florham performances are held in residence at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ, located just four miles from the center of Morristown and a few blocks from the train station. Our events take place in Lenfell Hall, the former music room of the Mansion located in the center of campus. This 120-year-old Gilded Age masterpiece includes winding staircases, large hand-carved marble fireplaces, high ceilings, and classic paintings, making it an elegant and relaxing setting for operatic events.
